The Arsenal U-12 Boys (2-1-3) went into action on Tues night knowing they had a big challenge ahead. They played host to the Flash who came into the game undefeated at 6-0 and had been destroying their opponents. While the boys came out hard and had some good scoring chances the Flash got onto the board first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Arsenal boys did not let it affect them as they kept pounding forward until Quint Boyd was able to tie the score at 1-1. At the end of the half Austin Blatt stole the ball in the defensive end and exploding towards the goal and finished his scoring chance as time expired giving Arsenal a 2-1 lead at halftime. The boys picked up in the 2nd half right where they left off when Quint Boyd scored his 2nd goal off of a great steal in the offensive end by Logan Graham. At 3-1 the lead still did not feel safe with the scoring power the Flash possesses but the defensive effort by Ethan Debolt, Austin Blatt and Logan McLaughlin would not allow the Flash to get a good scoring chance at all in the 2nd half. With the score 3-1 and Arsenal keeping the pressure on Tyler Butcher finished the scoring off of a deflected save by their goalkeeper making the final 4-1. Logan McLaughlin, Logan Graham and Quint Boyd did an excellent job of controlling the mid field and Ryan Reynolds and Nick Malek worked hard throughout the whole game. Doug Welker and Tyler Butcher combined in the goal while both also worked tirelessly on the offensive end. I am very proud of how hard the boys played for 60 minutes and deserved to win this game. We executed in all phases of the game and look to continue our run when we take our 3-1-3 record on the road vs. the CW Pride(3-2-0) on Tues Oct 14.

The Arsenal U12 Boys participated in the Dublin Charity Cup on labor day weekend coming away with a record of 4-0 on their way to claiming the championship. Competing in the white division, Arsenal opened the tournament with an exciting 4-3 victory over league rival Gahanna Arsenal Blue. The boys started off fast jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first 20min but Gahanna would not quit as they scored a goal just before the half to close it to 3-1. The second half started the same way the first one ended with Gahanna scoring twice more to tie the game at 3-3. However the boys regained their composure and were able to get a goal in the final minute to get to the final score. Coach Butcher said of his team “This would have been an easy game to let get a way and the team showed lots of heart and effort to find that last goal to push them over the top.

The second game saw Arsenal (1-0-0) face the Solon Strikers (0-1-0). Arsenal once again got off to a great start going into halftime with a 5-1 advantage. The second half did not see the Arsenal team let up as they walked away with a 6-1 win. Coach Butcher was pleased to see his team close this game out and not allow the Solon team any hope of getting back in the game.

The 3rd game on Sunday morning was critical for the Arsenal boys. A win or tie would secure them a birth in the championship game while a loss would have most likely sent them home for the weekend. Arsenal (2-0-0) faced Anthony Wayne United (1-1-0) in a game that started much like the first 2 as Arsenal jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. However Anthony Wayne would not go quietly as they clawed their way back to a 2-2 tie at halftime. The second half saw the Arsenal team take command finding the back of the net 3 more times and tightening up defensively not allowing any second half goals on the way to an impressive 5-2 win and a berth in the championship game. Coach Butcher felt the key to this point in the tournament was the team work showed by all 11 members of his team. Butcher stated “The willingness of our players to work together and be unselfish made all the difference, we controlled the ball and made tremendous passes and crosses and played exceptional team defense.”

The Championship game pitted Arsenal (3-0-0) against the Twinsburg Tiger (3-0-0). Twinsburg competes in the top division of the OASL league and was a very strong challenge.  The game started out back and forth and Coach Butcher felt that the Twinsburg team played a very similar style to the Arsenal team. The games first goal came from Twinsburg about 15 minutes into the first half which marked the first time Arsenal had been behind the whole tournament. Arsenal did not take long tying it up though as they won a corner kick about a minute later and converted on a great header from Logan Graham. The game went back and forth the rest of the half and stayed at 1-1 going into halftime. Coach butcher instructed his players during halftime to play their game and not fall back into any bad habits. “We knew this game was not going to be easy and would take a full 60 minutes to have a chance to win this game.” The second half saw the battle continue with both teams having opportunities before Arsenal broke the tie about 12 minutes into the half to put them on top 2-1. The game continued to go back and forth with neither team wanting to give in. “At 2-1 I really felt like we needed another goal due to the way they were playing I felt they were going to score another goal before the game was over” stated Butcher. Then with 8 minutes left in the game Arsenal found another goal that would prove to be all they needed to close out the game with a 3-1 win to claim the championship.

Coach Butcher’s summary:

I could not be more excited with the way we played all weekend. We had great goal keeping from Doug Welker all weekend and Ethan Debolt and Austin Blatt did a tremendous job playing the back position. We were able to control the midfield through the play of Parker Webb, Quint Boyd, Logan McLaughlin, and Mark Jonard while Tyler Butcher, Ryan Reynolds, Nick Malek and Logan Graham did a wonderful job up front.

This weekend is a complement to how hard these players have worked and listened in practice during the summer and I am looking forward to a great season from the team.

The Arsenal U12 Girls participated in the Dublin Charity Cup this past weekend coming away with a record of 0-1-2.   Participating in the Green (top) division, Arsenal opened the game with a 2-1 lost to fellow league team rivals, WASA Eagles.   WASA opened up the scoring early into the second half, but Capria Hall’s quickly leveled the score 3 minutes later sending a ball into the back of the net, just off the finger tips of WASA’s goal keeper.   The Eagles would eventually earn their second goal of the match, securing the 2-1 win.   “I was very impressed by effort”, noted coach Bill Glaze.   “I thought Laureen (Hartnell) played a tremendous game in goal and knew exactly when come out and when to stay home.   Had she not been on top of her game, the outcome could have been drastically different”.

The second match of the tournament witnessed Arsenal (0-1-0) against Genesse Star Soccer Club (GSSC).   Finding themselves down 4-0 after about 15 minutes of play, the team adjusted into a more defensive formation to try and counter attack against GSSC strong midfield presence.   “We were having difficulty picking up their midfielders and were giving them too many clean looks at goal.   We moved from our normal 2 defenders, 3 midfielder, 2 forward role (2-3-2) into a 3 defender, 3 midfielder, 1 forward formation (3-3-1).   We figured if we could get numbers behind the ball and then catch them in transition our forwards would get the opportunities we would need to score”.   The adjustment immediately paid off, as forward Darby Lynch earned her two goals of the contest to bring the game to within in two at the half.   Entering the second half, Kennedy Taylor, Layne Hartnell, and Rachael Waite would each find the back of the net to combat GSSE only second half goal, leveling the game at 5-5.   “I was very impressed by the effort our girls”, remarked Glaze.   “They never quit despite being down by 4 goals.   We carry 12 girls on our roster and every single girl contributed to this effort.   They were all  stars in this game…there were no specific bench players, no specific substitutes, or individual play makers…just quality players who contributed to an overall team effort.

Entering the third match of the contest, found Arsenal facing fellow league team Classic’s FC Elite.   Resembling a bit of a chess match, both teams came out in a 3-3-1 formation, perhaps waiting to see what each team would show in terms of attack.   Neither team waited too long, as Arsenal quickly shifted back into a 2-3-2 hoping to get a little more offensive pressure, against Classic’s three attacking forwards.   Classic’s adjustment would pay off first, sending a 20 yard shot into the back of the net with about 15 minutes remaining in the half.   Capria Hall would level the score at 1-1 by half-time earning her second goal of the tournament.   Entering the second half, the Arsenal U12 Girls found themselves, down a player, as defender/midfielder Cameron Smith was unable to continue due to an injury (later diagnosed as a broken arm).   Classic’s would eventual take a 2-1 lead, scoring off a second chance ball with approximately 15 minutes remaining in the match.   Pushing everyone up in attack, midfielder Rachael Waite would tie the score at 2-2, sending a 25 yard looping shoot into the back of the net.   The goal would prove to be the final goal of the contest, despite a flurry of offensive opportunities by Arsenal in the final minutes of the contest.

“Overall I am very pleased with our performance”, remarked coach Glaze.  “ We lead our bracket in scoring putting eight balls into the back of the net in three games.   We were very competitively matched up against the competition and look forward to starting the fall league season.

The girls U-10 team played in the Green Division at the Dublin Charity Cup this weekend and had a 1-2 record.  They started off the weekend with a 4-0 win over GFC Arsenal Blue.  Every team member gave 110% during this game, it was amazing!  The team lost game #2 against Classics FC Elite 4-7 and game #3 to Strongsville 2-8.  The weekend was tough but at the same time a great experience because we all learned what we need to work on as a B team.

The Arsenal U-10 Boys kicked off the 2008 Fall Season with a 5-4 victory over Pickerington in MOSSL play.   The Arsenal offense was led by Kaden Taylor’s “hat trick” , coupled with a goal each by Chase Dinan and  Aaron Ashby.  Noah Alfman and Spencer Littick turned in tough midfield and defensive efforts to secure the victory.

In Thursday night MOSSL league action Arsenal U-10 boys traveled to Columbus East, near Easton, were they won a very physical battle 4-2.  Chase Dinan recorded a “hat trick” scoring 3 goals and Kaden Taylor punched in a cross from Dinan for another goal.  Tough defense by Greg Nolder and Noah Alfman set the tone for Arsenal as they controlled ball possession for most of the game. Noah Cornell and Spencer Littick also turned in a physical effort in the second half to keep Columbus East on their heels. Arsenal improved to 2-0 with the victory.

The Girls U-9 team played up a bracket at the MOSSL tournament and left with a 2-1 record.  They started off the weekend with a 4-1 victory over GFC Arsenal Blue (a “B” team), but Saturday evening lost against OP White (also a “B” team) 7-6.  They finished the weekend with a 3-1 win over PASA, whose only regular season loss was from our team.  The girls had an awesome season with a 9-0-1 record in the regular season and 6-1-2 in tournament play (and in every tournament played up a bracket.)  Overall the team had 17 games without a loss and 13 consecutive wins.  In 19 games the team scored a total of 114 goals (44 off of assists), had 323 attempts and saved 266 goals.  These girls are really an amazing group of kids and deserve a big pat on the back!  We are excited to see what the fall season brings as the team bumps up to the U-10 age bracket and potentially the “B” division!  HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!!!

The U11 girls ended the MOSSL tournament with a 2-2 tie against Union County in a hard fought battle. The girls played very well and led the game throughout until UC scored with under 30 seconds in the game.  Parents once again THANKS for all your support of the Arsenal soccer program and hope to see you at tryouts.

The U11 girls traveled to Marysville recently and lost a close battle 3-2 due to defensive lapses and mental mistakes. Then they bounced back to beat the other Union County team at home 4-3, playing as hard in the second half as I have seen them play all year.  Next the team traveled to Chillicothe and won another rain soaked game 5-2, finishing the season at home beating Olentangy 3-2.  In the midst of all these games the team has finished second in the MASC tournament, co-champs at the Longaberger tournament, and finished second in MOSSL league play.  The team finished 7-2-1 in league play with 22 points as Union County won the league with 23 points with a record of 7-1-2. The U11 girls played their first two games of the MOSSL tournament with the first game against Groveport and playing to a 0-0 tie. The girls dominated play throughout 90% of the game but could not find the net.  Then the second game saw them lose in the last minute of the game 2-1 to Union County. The girls finish tournament play at 12:40pm on 051808 against Union County SE which won the regular season.  The team has played well overall this session but still need to work on their soccer skills over the summer to become more complete players.  The ladies will be receiving a player evaluation which is to show both the player and parent areas of strength and areas that need development.  I will tell all of you that I did not grade any player in technical or tactical as mastering a skill as every girl on this team needs to improve their technical/tactical skill level.  I do feel that some girls have mastered the psychological component of being coachable, passion for the game, etc.  Each young lady on this team has areas that need to be improved and if able spend some time at soccer camps over the summer.  Arsenal soccer coaches’ Dick Graham, Matt McCandlish, and Don Mercer will be holding  a 5-6 week training camp for interested players.   Information pertaining to this will be posted after tryouts.  With that said tryouts for the upcoming fall season for the U12 Girls will be June 5, 6:30-8:30pm. June 7, 9:30-10:30am,  June 8, 2:30-3:30pm.   PLAYERS NEED TO REGISTER 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO TRYOUTS  AND MUST HAVE A COPY OF THEIR BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND A PASS PORT SIZE PHOTO.

Back to Back MOSSL Champs!!

Game #9 against Dublin Tiempo gave the Girls U-9 team their 8th regular season win.  They walked away with a 4-1 victory.  Their overall record is now 8-0-1.  Abby Hutcheson scored 2 goals, Kylee Ritchie and Destiny Johnson both had one.  An assist was made by Kara Glaze.  Goalies Ritchie and Hutcheson saved a total of 11 goals in the game.

The girls U-9 team finished their regular season game Tuesday at NCA Blast with another victory (5-0) and are now 9-0-1 in the regular season.  This victory was especially sweet for several reasons:  Back to back MOSSL Champions, back to back seasons without a loss in the regular season, and 16 straight games without a loss this season.  Coach Ritchie and Weekley want to send out a huge CONGRATULATIONS to the girls for another great season and to the parents for all of their support!  The team hopes to add to their winning season with the MOSSL tournament this weekend as they bump up to play B teams.  Good luck ladies!

The Arsenal Girls U-9 team won the 2008 Longaberger Shootout (“Mud-Bowl ’08”) this weekend with a 3-0 record.  They started the weekend out strong on Saturday morning with an 8-1 victory over West Virginia’s Wave.  The girls continued their winning streak Saturday night with a 6-4 victory over Hilliard Blue (a “B” division team in MOSSL.) Sunday morning Arsenal swept past Newark’s Xtabi with a 7-2 victory.  Coach Ritchie and Coach Weekley can’t say enough about how well the team played all weekend despite the rainy and cold weather.  Good luck to the team as they play their final regular season game this Tuesday night!!!

The Arsenal U-9 boys fell 3-2 to Delaware Tuesday.  It was an exciting game with momentum swinging back and forth and Arsenal putting on the press at the end.  Inside the last minute two balls narrowly missed going in, one shot by Noah Alfman was stopped by the goalie just before crossing the goal line and then Chase Dinan bounced a shot off the left post with 20 seconds left.  Kaden Taylor put forth a phenomenal effort controlling the midfield, scoring one goal, and making an assist on a goal from Chase Dinan.  Noah Cornell, Aaron Ashby and Spencer Littick provided solid defense and ball distribution.  Goalie Alex Kelso did his best to keep the Arsenal on the winning track by making some great saves but a PK and late breakaway proved the difference as Arsenal could only muster 2 goals to Delaware’s 3.

The Arsenal U-9 boys continued their winning ways Sunday at Riverside Park with a victory over Team Ohio 6-2.   The first half was a tight match as both defenses held strong.  Chase Dinan and Kaden Taylor both found the net for Arsenal as they took a 2-0 lead into halftime.  The defensive combination of Noah Cornell, Noah Alfman, Kaden Taylor and Goalie,  Alex Kelso,  worked hard for the first half shut out.  In the second half, two goals by Noah Cornell and another goal each by Chase Dinan and Kaden Taylor extended Arsenal’s lead to 6-0 and eventually a 6-2 victory.

The ladies this spring in league play through 6 games have scored 14 goals and given up 7 goals all while learning the 2-3-2 formation.  I would like to congratulate both Cameron Smith and Rachael Waite as they have been selected to the State Pool Team for ODP. To get one player from our area is an honor but to get 2 from the same team is a special honor and a tribute to how hard these young ladies work at practice and spend extra time trying to improve their skill level. Keep up the good work and please take advantage of the training you will receive through the Olympic Developmental Program.

The U11 Arsenal ladies soccer team played the Groveport ladies at Riverside park and it was a very physical, hard fought battle. The Arsenal ladies soccer club came away with a 3-1 victory with goals by Rachael Waite on a direct kick, Layne Hartnell on a follow shot that the goalie had originally knocked one of Darby Lynch's shots down, and then Rachael Waite played a beautiful lead pass into space that Darby Lynch one touched into the net on the far post.  The pass by Rachael and the shot by Darby were PERFECT.  The team played excellent soccer and defensively were led by Kaitlyn Graham, Cameron Smith, and goalie Lauren Hartnell.  Midfield was exceptional led by Emma Glaze, Michelle Lang, Kenedi Taylor, and Rachael Waite. Forward play was very strongly led by Darby Lynch, Layne Hartnell, Sharzad Frost and Maddie Balsley.  Arsenal ladies play CESA at Riverside park at 4pm on 042608,  Saturday.  As always thanks to the parents for their support to the team.

The U11 Arsenal girls team traveled to Groveport recently and lost a close defensive battle 1-0 in the last 5 minutes of the game. The team played well overall but a few mental errors caused some players to be out of position. On 041708 the NCSL ladies came to Zanesville and led us 1-0 only to see the Arsenal ladies play the best soccer as a team and win the game 2-1. Goals were scored by Darby Lynch and Kenedi Taylor with 2 assists from Rachael Waite.  Excellent midfield play by Cameron Smith, Layne Hartnell and Emma Glaze. An impressive performance by our defense led by Kaitlyn Graham, Michelle Lang and goalie Lauren Hartnell. In the fall MOSSL tourney the NCSL ladies won the "B" division.  On 041908 the Arsenal ladies traveled to Dublin and as a team did not play well and ended up with a tie 2-2 with OP Tiempo. On a rainy day it just was not meant to be as we completely dominated play in the midfield but could not buy a goal.  The team is currently 2-1-1 in league play as well as a second place finish in the MASC tournament.  The ladies play Groveport at home on 042208 at 6:15 pm then play CESA at home 042608 at 4pm. The Arsenal ladies are currently sitting in second place in the MOSSL. As always thanks to the parents as this would not be possible without their support.

This past week-end the U11 girls Arsenal team participated in the MASC tournament in Cincinnati.  The first game they played Beechmont Panthers to a 1-1 tie with player of the match awarded to Rachael Waite.  The Arsenal girls dominated play for 90% of the game but could not buy a goal to get the win.  After the game Beechmont's coach told me, "We got very lucky and were totally dominated the whole game."  That afternoon we played the Lady Trojans from Troy, Ohio and dominated play again but this time came out with a 6-0 win for the effort. Player of the match awarded to Kaitlyn Graham.  On Sunday morning the Arsenal girls played Sycamore United to a 2-2 tie which is the same club we lost in the finals to the previous year. Player of the match awarded to Cameron Smith.  We then needed the Beechmont Panthers and Lady Trojans to tie to make the finals and they did 0-0.  Arsenal girls played in the finals and ended up losing to Worthington United from MOSSL "B" division 3-0. Player of the match was awarded to Kaitlyn Graham who in turn gave her patch in front of both coaches, parents and the 2 teams to our super goalie Lauren Hartnell. Kaitlyn said, "If not for Lauren we would have NEVER made the finals and she is the deserving patch winner."  The team played short handed all week-end with 10 players but played the best soccer I have seen them play in a long time. The team is comprised of Maddie Balsley, Sharzad Frost, Michelle Lang, Emma Glaze, Lauren Hartnell, Layne Hartnell, Kenedi Taylor, Rachael Waite, Darby Lynch(absent from tourney), Cameron Smith, and Kaitlyn Graham. Finishing second is a huge accomplishment for these young ladies as they played their hearts out all week-end.  Special thanks to the parents for without their efforts this would not have been possible.

The U11 Arsenal girls started the spring with a 3-1 win at Canal Winchester on a muddy, rain soaked field which negated their use of team speed.  Goals were scored by Rachael Waite, Darby Lynch, and Layne Hartnell. Goalie Lauren Hartnell played well with several saves. Overall the team played well with running a new formation the 2-3-2 but, still have a few adjustments to make. The next game is 040908 at Groveport against Phoenix at 6:15 pm.
