The final game of the tournament, matched Arsenal against the #4 seed U-10 girls Classic’s team located out of Powell, Ohio.   Coming out a little flat, and definitely tired, the Classic’s would take a 1-0 lead, scoring at the 10:33 mark in the first half.   Darby Lynch would tie the game at the 3:06 mark in the second half, scoring on a 30 yard direct kick, providing the team their only goal of the contest.   The game would remain tied at 1-1, improving the Arsenal’s U-10 record to 2-0-2, earning the team a second place finish in tournament play.

ARSENAL U-10G

Do you remember the wonder twins cartoon characters from the early 1980’s?   Well if you do, they are back!   While they may not have super human abilities like the cartoon characters, they are twins and they reside on the Arsenal U-10 girl’s soccer team.   Their names are Layne and Lauren Hartnel and together they are exhibiting some super soccer skills.   On a wet Tuesday night in New Albany Ohio, Layne and Lauren helped the Arsenal U-10 girls record their first win of the season by defeating the New Albany Freedom u-10 girls 4-0.   At the 3:18 mark, Cameron Smith recorded the teams’ first goal, when she dribbled through the Freedom’s defense beating the goalie with a low well placed ball.   “I thought I was off sides” remarked Smith “but when I didn’t hear a whistle I just keep going”.  At the 24:05 mark, Arsenal’s Layne Hartnel scored her first goal of the season when she received a throw in from Madison Ashby and sent a 20 yard shot, just beat the Freedom goal keeper on the far post.   Arsenal took a 2-0 lead into half time with Kylie Mercer recording three saves in goal.   Entering the second half of play Layne would find the back of the net again scoring at the 5:05 mark when she finished off a cross ball from Kate Ware.  Not content to be outdone by her sister, Lauren Hartnel helped advanced the team’s scoring efforts with ten minutes remaining in the contest when she placed a direct kick into the back of the net from approximately 20 yards outside the goal.   Emma Glaze, Leigh McInturf, and Michelle Lang helped preserve the teams first shut out of the season as the team improves to 1-0 on the season.  The U-10 girls will continue league play on Sunday September 10th, at 3:15 pm when they take on Columbus East Soccer Association (CESA) U-10 girls at Riverside Soccer Fields.

U-16  Boys  Update

So far it has been an awesome season.  We have played six games and are still undefeated with 22 goals scored and only two scored against us.  The boys have an excellent chemistry and play well together.  I can tell you that the other teams have been good competition for us.  Some times the games get very physical, and some times the other teams are difficult to score against because they play only a defensive game.  It is not over yet, so we need to take one game at a time.

As we know, teams improve throughout the season, and it becomes more challenging for us to win games.  I’m proud of these boys, and I thank them for all the effort and dedication to the team.  Congratulations for a great season, defenders, midfielders, and strikers.

After this weekend the U-13 girls have run their record to 3-0-2 and are close to taking over the top spot.  We went on the road and had a great comeback to beat Hillard 2-1 on Saturday.  Two goals by Haylie Canter and an assist by Traci Tatum paced the offense.   Allie Sang had another solid game in goal.  Laura Vincent and Jordan Ashby played well on defense.  Alexia Hernandez stepped up her play in the midfield.

On Sunday we tied Newark Xtabi 0-0.  This was a very physical and hard fought game.  Aubrey Snode, Jessica Woods, Laura Vincent and Alyssa Waite did a fantastic job of holding down one of the best offenses in our league.  Allie Sang had a great PK save in goal.  All of the midfielders had a good performance in both games.  We're halfway threw the season and looking good.  Keep on improving and Go Arsenal!

It was a mixed week for the girls.  On Monday night, we defeated Union County Elite FC 5-0 behind a hat trick by Dani Scheetz and goals by Mackenzie Riley and Stacey Smith.  Midfield was controlled by Jennifer Raymond, Noelle Debolt, Ashley Carr, Kari Deaton, Candice Amos, and Danielle Thomas.

Saturday, however, was easily our poorest performance of the season.  We were not sharp and were very unlucky against an undermanned CESA FC team and fell 1-0 on a late goal.  Practice this week will be Tuesday,  May 9, and Thursday, May 11, from 5:00 to 6:30.

Our next games are this weekend in the Longaberger Shootout.

U14-Boys bounce back with a big win against GFCB/ Gahana .The boys played to a 3-0 victory on the road, scoring 1 goal n 1st half and adding 2 more in the 2nd half. The defense records another shutout and has only giving up 4 goals in 7 games. On the other hand the offense just keep the adding up the goals, they now stand at 18, second best in our league but the other team has 1 more game in than we do.

Our next games will be at the Longaberger Shootout tournament on May 13 &14 against New Albany and Grove City on Sat. and the semi finals /finals on Sun. As I have said in the past this a very gifted and talented group of young men and represent the ARSENAL name to the fullest.

The U-14 boys fell short in the game against Canal Winchester, taking their 1st loss of the season. It was the kind of game that you out play the other team but you come up on the short end of the stick. The boys played well and we out shot them ,and only allowing the CW Pride 5 shots, I will says that they had a very good goalie. Our record now stands at  5-1 league play and 7-1-1 overall. Our next game is Thursday at Gahanna.

First Tournament…First Win!!!

Arsenal SC opened it spring 2006 season with a first place finish at the Jackson Pike Invitation this past weekend.   Arsenal’s U-19 boys brought home a first place finish behind outstanding efforts from it's two college bound goalkeepers, Alex Stout (Mt. Vernon Nazarene) and Adam Thompson (Seton Hill).   Competing in the U-19 A division of The Jackson Pike Invitational, one of western Kentucky's top rated select soccer tournaments; the Arsenal U-19 team went 3-0-1 earning the team’s first Tournament Championship honor for the 2006 Season.  The victory came as a result of a well balanced effort between a solid defense unit and an opportunistic offense attack.   Anchoring the defense for Arsenal U-19s was Tri-valley senior Ross Barr who helped the team limit the opposition scoring to only six goals in four games.   While Arsenal’s defense was stifling the oppositions attack, Arsenal strikers and midfield could not be silenced scoring a total of 16 goals during the tournaments four games.   Scoring from the striker position was Watkins Memorial senior Jon Snyder and Ohio Northern freshman Geoff Smith. Solid midfield performances were turned in by Tri-Valley senior Brent Mc Ghee, Watkins Memorial senior Scott Spangler, and Granville High School senior Chris Locke.  Coach Zimmerman was very pleased with the team’s performance and believes the players played with tremendous heart and dedication.   “We are pretty beat up and sore…we had a lot of players that were unable to attend this tournament which placed additional physical demands on the team.   We showed great progress during the tournament and hope to carry this momentum into the Mid America Soccer Classic (MASC) tournament in two weeks”.   The U-19 commence league play this Sunday against Canal Winchester.
